Monument of Monte Sabbiuno

The Monument of Monte Sabbiuno, also called Sacrario ai Caduti di Sabbiuno (Sabbiuno War Memorial), is a monument commemorating the partisans brutally murdered by Nazi-Fascist soldiers on Monte di Sabbiuno between 14 and 23 December 1944.

The impressive monument to the Sabbiuno Massacre, which can be reached in about 20 minutes by car from Bologna, was opened in 1973 on the very ridge of the ravines where partisans and political prisoners were slaughtered after being imprisoned in the nearby farmhouse.

The monument was designed by the members of Gruppo Architetti Città Nuova who, like the workforce that built it, chose not to receive any remuneration for their work.

The monument consists of two parts. On one side there is a curved concrete wall standing on the ridge from which machine guns protrude, a clear reference to the firing squad. On the other, a row of 53 boulders lay on the ravine, each bearing the name of a victim of the massacre. Yet, not all of them were identified, which is why the 54th commemorates the 47 fallen soldiers who remained nameless.
