What to expect?

What is the Chiusa? It’s a huge sluice built in the Middle Ages in order to divert the course of the Reno river and canalise its waters towards the centre of Bologna. The city lacked a watercourse at the time, which seemed increasingly necessary for its industrial development and for the water supply of the population.

So it was that by diverting the Reno through the Chiusa, Bologna was able to build a network of canals that could supply the city's mills and factories with hydraulic power, canals that still flow underground today.

This bike tour takes you from the heart of Bologna to the Chiusa in Casalecchio, a small town close to Bologna, riding on the cycle path that runs along the Reno canal. Join us to find out more about the ancient river port of Bologna and its manufactures, as well as the hydraulic flow regulation systems along the canal.
