Parco 11 Settembre 2001

The 11 September 2001 Park is one of the most popular parks in Bologna. In the shade of its trees, university students gather, picnics are organised and families with children meet. In the summer, with the opening of the garden kiosk, a wide range of concerts and meetings take place in this green area.

The park was once occupied by a large manufacturing site, which dealt in tobacco processing. It was located between Via Azzo Gardino and Via Riva Reno, in a well-known area now hosting the Cineteca di Bologna, the Faculty of Communication and the old river port area of Bologna.

The Regia Manifattura Tabacchi (Royal Tobacco Factory) was designed in 1906 in art nouveau style, as evidenced by the only surviving building overlooking Via Riva Reno which now houses the Cineteca. Cigars and cigarettes were produced here until 1952, when the factory was moved to the suburbs. Badly damaged by bombing during the Second World War, the factory was abandoned until the 1970s, when the Municipality of Bologna began its reconversion into a public garden.

Walking along the paths through the 11 September 2001 Park we can observe various species of trees such as black poplars, oaks and maples, but also lindens, horse chestnuts and elms, as well as more exotic trees such as cedars and Himalayan pines.
